How did this project come to
pass?
One gives them care, one listens to them. One
leaves their quarter with blouse that is no longer white, with a vague
smell of
burning on the skin, in the hair. Reddened eyes follow the blackish
plumes that reach towards the sky.
Day and night, all year around, the smoke from the
braziers hangs stagnant in the cells. For the women, but also for the
mentally ill and the most impoverished use cooking in order to earn a
living. More than 600 daily rations
are produced in saucepans balanced on improvised trestles. The quantity
of food that needs to be produced and the resources available mean that
it is not possible to be choosy about what fuel is used.
All of this translates into smoke, eye ailments
and women and babies with damaged lungs. In order to address this
problem, it was necessary to create a hole in the roof and allow
cleaner air to circulate the building. This is what we did.
We had to evaluate the needs of the prisoners and
then obtain the authorisation of the authorities before announcing the
project and collecting the necessary funds. Finally, we had the chimney
built, explaining step by step what the result of the building work was
going to be. This adventure took from March
to July 2007 to
achieve. Today, the women breathe better, the eye conditions are
becoming less common and the increased efficiency of the ovens means
that it is no longer necessary to work from morning to night. All of
this is what we are delighted to share with you with these photos.
